A Real Raccoon Uses the Tokyo Subway?

Sticking out isn’t always bad.

Would you freak out if you saw a raccoon calmly sauntering its way through the ticket gate to the subway? Almost like it does this every day.

Just an average day for a busy tanuki.

On September 2nd, a little furry commuter was seen at Shinjuku Station in Tokyo, Japan, walking in amongst thousands of other people on a busy Friday evening.

In the photo above and video below, you can see it even had its own personal usher on hand, a station employee clearing a path for it and ensuring passersby gave it personal space. Even though it was treated like a celebrity — it was only a wild tanuki.

A reader of my Little Fried Chicken and Sushi strip shared this story with me in the comments on the GoComics site, and it got my imagination racing. A tanuki is thought of as a magical creature in Japan that can shapeshift and play tricks on people. Was there a spell involved in this encounter?

I love having Tanuki as a character in my strip, and this event brings the idea of an animal doing human things to life in a new way. Some might have wondered if this raccoon forgot to turn itself into a salaryman to blend in. Maybe it uses the train regularly to get around Tokyo?

The Shinjuku train station it was spotted in has a mascot of a Tanuki with a white swirl on its belly. The mascot’s name is TanuTanu. Was this the real thing?

An advertisement for TanuTanu the subway mascot.

No one was sure about where the Tanuki came from, but it was spotted at the station around 9:30 p.m. The staff guided it from the platform, and the animal went up the stairs and towards the New South Exit, where the video was taken. Then, it walked through the ticket gates and disappeared into the night.

We’ll never know what the Tanuki was up to, but it sure seemed comfortable in its surroundings. Not scurrying away, frightened of people, makes you think it does this often without much fanfare.

The city must be a tough place for a raccoon. I’m glad the station attendants helped him get where he needed to go.

It’s similar to the time Tanuki started working an office job. It didn’t last too long, though.

P.S. If this was indeed “the” TanuTanu mascot, spirit of, or a real magical tanuki on his way home from a long day of work pretending to be human, it stood out. Still, it was ultimately accepted by the people all around.

The video and news reports didn’t talk about people running away from it in fear or getting scared because a wild animal was walking next to them.

As a human being, a black male, who gets stared at, surprises others by being a tall foreigner on the train and sticks out just about everywhere when I’m visiting Japan. I’m not sure how to feel about this. A wild tanuki in the subway station is unique enough to make the news, but it doesn’t shock or get people’s attention the way a person who looks different can.

Sometimes, I wish I could shapeshift into a tanuki, ride the train with help from attendants, and everyone thinks it’s so cute.

Am I jealous of TanuTanu, the raccoon? Not really. Maybe a little envious, though.

If Japan Can Open Up, So Can You

FCSLittleTanukiJPNclosedFOREIGNERS.jpg

Imagine watching nine massive steamships for the very first time in your life, something you never knew existed, approaching Edo bay near modern-day Tokyo in February of 1854. Commodore Matthew C. Perry landed his ships in Japan, uninvited mind you, in an effort to force diplomatic relations with the Shogun and open trade.

After over two hundred years of isolating itself from the rest of the world, Japan and the average Japanese citizen knew nothing of other countries or races. Witnessing white soldiers march off their metal ships and make the demand “Take me to your leader.” must have felt close to aliens from outer space landing on our planet.

The scare tactic worked. There was no way Japanese forces could have stood a chance against the might of the U.S. military at that time. On March 31, The Treaty of Kanagawa was signed between America and Japan. The country was open to the world. Even though it would take many years to establish international trade, Japanese people were thrust into accepting a new truth. They were not alone in the universe.

What limiting beliefs are you holding on to with little knowledge or experience to back them? The world is forcing us all to open our minds. Experiencing the pandemic and watching racial injustice and protests are making us realize we’re all human. Making us see that caring about the health and well being of people is what really matters.

The truths of our modern world have landed. Open your heart.

What's Next, Aliens?

What's Next, Aliens?

While going through a pandemic and Black Lives Matter protests worldwide like Hachiro in the above FC&S comic strip, we’re all waiting for the next big event that will turn the world upside down. Could it be an alien invasion? Or, perhaps, off-world beings deciding we’ve gone too far and then making themselves known to us somehow to calm us the heck down?

We should all be prepared for more fantastic events that bring us together as a human race.

Baby Yoda? I want the toy!

The Star Wars fandom running through my veins could not resist the force, calling me to make this comic about The Mandalorian show and everyone's favorite child.

FCSLittleKarlBABYYODA.jpg

It looks like Disney missed the boat on this merchandising opportunity. I couldn't find any baby Yoda toys for sale for this holiday season! You can pre-order one from the Disney store online that will be released in February—the toy design I saw was not all that cute—but I bet billions of people are throwing their money down anyway. Not me. I'll wait for the updated, more adorable version.

Would you buy a baby Yoda toy?

Have an out of this world week. And may the force be with you!

Tanuki's New Design!

New Little Fried Chicken and Sushi comic strips relaunched on Monday, March 26 here and on GoComics. There was one change to the strip.  Did you notice?

That's right, Tanuki's character design got an upgrade!  He's cuter and has actual hands that will make it easier to create gags where he needs to hold objects.   Take a look at this model sheet I put together with pictures of actual Tanukis for comparison.

What do you think about his new design?  Let me know in the comments.

Fried Chicken and Sushi 403 Caring and supportive Tanuki?

It's sad that we don't trust Tanuki to be sincere but more often than not, he has a selfish agenda attached to his caring ways.  This strip also helps to establish Tanuki's difficulties with using his magic that will come more into play in later strips.  GIVE ME A FOLLOW ON TWITTER!

Little Fried Chicken and Sushi comics!

I wanted to play with my FC&S characters and draw some comics where they're all kids in fourth grade.  For the rest of December, I'll be posting Little Fried Chicken and Sushi strips every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.  I'm sure you are all busy with holiday fun but please stop by my site on those days to check out the new strips.  These comics have less details so I can draw them faster and put up four each week instead of two.  It's been a fun departure from my usual storylines.  It was fun to make comics aimed at kids and have a chance to put all the characters together with Tanuki.  Instead of Tanuki being stuck in Karl's house, he actually comes to school with him and uses his magic to cause trouble.  Enjoy the comics and let me know what you think!  CLICK HERE TO LIKE MY FACEBOOK FAN PAGE!

Fried Chicken and Sushi 350 J meets Tanuki

Tanukis are known for tricking people with their magical powers but I have a feeling that our Tanuki isn't very talented.  Or, he wants J to get mad at Karl to screw up their friendship.  Either way, it doesn't look like he's ready to fully show himself to J.  Perhaps, Tanuki isn't real after all and he's just a figment of Karl's imagination.  One day we might find out.  What do you think?

Fried Chicken and Sushi 331 How will Tanuki handle J coming to Japan?

I think it's pretty clear how Tanuki really feels about J coming to Japan.  Karl will have to figure out a way to explain to J why he's always buying new plates.  Let's hope Karl saves plenty of "New plates" money for when he hangs out with J and Tanuki needs to deal with feeling jealous.

Fan Art- Jamie Lynn Lano

Check out this amazing fan art by Jamie Lynn Lano!  Aren't Karl and Tanuki cute?!  She even made Karl look a little awkward.  Just like he is! ;)  You can read her awesome blog about living and working in Japan called LIVING TALL IN JAPAN.  One of my favorite series of posts she writes is about her experience working as an art assistant on the manga Prince of Tennis.  Very interesting reading about how things work in a real manga studio in Japan from the eyes of a foreigner.  Check out the list of those posts here or just click on her fan art above!

Fried Chicken and Sushi 260 Should that dream become reality?

Looks like Tanuki is wrong on that one!  I'm pretty sure there are plenty of people out there that love reading a comic about a black guy living in Japan.  Let's hope, after that joke, it will stay that way!  Did you notice that Tanuki's wearing a robe?  More clothes?  I'm having fun with it.  A Tanuki upgrade. ;)  Shout out time!  If you like vampire adventure you need to read my YOUNGBLOODS graphic novel HERE.  Thanks to all of you friends and fans that have bought it and enjoyed reading it!

Fried Chicken and Sushi 258 Tanuki comes back...again!

Tanuki needs to make up his mind.  Is he back or is he out?  It looks to me like he's found a reason to stay this time.  Let's just hope Karl can deal with him without going insane!  Did you notice Tanuki is wearing clothes?  Karl was talking about his victory at the sports festival so I thought it would be fun to put Tanuki in spandex workout gear.  They might be a little too tight though...

Fried Chicken and Sushi 253 The Black Samurai Returns

Remember, if you like my comic book art style, read my 200 page graphic novel HERE!  It was fun drawing The Black Samurai again but without hair and in traditional Japanese clothing.  This is how I originally created him so now I feel like we can really get into his adventures.  What will happen if he follows the strange spirit?  Will he be able to free Tanuki?  I hope you're enjoying these comics.  Thanks for reading!

Fried Chicken and Sushi 232 Tanuki still ain't talkin'

I guess Karl is just accustomed to going to Tanuki to talk about his struggles.  Maybe Tanuki is sick of listening and just refuses to interact.  Oh well, it's probably for the best.  Karl needs to learn to be more confident in himself anyway.  Even though Tanuki can be annoying, I wonder if any of you out there miss him?

Fried Chicken and Sushi 217 and 218

Sorry, I missed my blog update for Tuesday's FC&S comic!  I'm afraid most of you didn't notice because you don't really read my blog posts.  If you're into them then I'll comment on both comics for this week.  Looks like Tanuki is a little scared to not be needed if J comes to Japan.  Let's hope he's not gone for good!  Karl seems to be moving in the direction of wanting to try dating again.  Even though I'm sure he would love to show off that he has a Japanese girlfriend to J, we all know he's not that shallow.  What?  You've never wanted to show off to your friends?  Karl seems like the type of guy that needs to have something in common with a girl he's dating.  Let's hope for the best!

One more shout out to the FORUMS and my FACEBOOK FAN PAGE!

I hope I don't seem as lonely as Karl with all this social networking love I'm begging for!  It is nice to hear from my fans and interact though.  Even though Karl is isolated enough to talk to a tanuki statue, at least he has some friends that are looking out for him!  Thanks for reading!
