I agree that white rice is horrible for the body, almost pure carbs. But unless that is whole grain bread in his sandwich, which is very rare & expensive in Japan, that bread he is eating is white and just as bad as the white rice.

I don't think chips are healthy either. What happened to Carl's diabities concerns?

(Mind you, I'm not one to talk, since I often ate that horrible Meji chocolate just to get my chocolate fix.) Thank goodness for foreign import shops.

He's probably just eating what's familiar to him. I know that when I was in middle school there was a kid that would bring random pickled things, like pigs feet, to lunch and as a snack he'd have a bag of pork rinds.

It turns out he was from a farm down south and that was common for his family to eat. However, since the school was in the city, most of the kids would be completely weirded out.
