What it's Like on Lockdown with Kids

The world is on lockdown, and parents are losing their minds.

I understand why we must do this, and I support social distancing to flatten the curve, but it’s crazy to think any real learning will go on during this time. Why didn’t schools just close for summer break in April? Who are we kidding?

Let’s stop acting like this shelter-in-place situation is working for families. Parents don’t have time to become teachers, and kids couldn’t care less about doing schoolwork at home.

When regular school starts back again, there will be a massive amount of reviewing teachers will need to load onto students. Every kid will be behind and need to catch up.

What’s even harder?

No one is giving grades for work or projects now, so there’s little incentive for students to put more effort into their studies.

Indeed, it wouldn’t be fair to give grades because teachers have no idea what each family is facing at home. Even though this is understandable, it doesn’t take the pressure off of parents pushing their kids too hard to get schoolwork done at home. They think their child’s education will suffer.

Should we pile on the work for our kids or relax and let them do anything they want? Children are feeling the stress and fear of these uncertain times like us — maybe even more so because they can’t fully understand everything going on.

I think parents should be told they can do whatever they feel is right for their situation, and according to their beliefs.

Our primary concern should be to keep everyone physically and mentally healthy.

Every person on planet earth is behind right now.

Let’s stop pretending life can be “normal” when it comes to our kids’ education. Stop expecting to get from it as much as we did before the virus.

Free yourself from as much stress as possible.

Do what you can and let everything else go.
