It started back in the 70's & 80's during the housing boom when marketers started selling high end condos and used mansions in English as a marketing gimic. Soon everyone in Japan renting out apartments or selling condos started using mansion and the name suck.

HAhahaha. Boy, does this take me back. The previous occupant had left exactly 2 weeks before, but the dirt and decrepitude had obviously been left untouched since at least the occupant before that. Plus nice little bonus gifts like dirty dishes left out on the balcony and mildewed underwear (!) behind the bathtub.
