WAAAAHHH! I miss my Japanese bike! It looked just like the "mama chari" and was cherry red. We had to leave it behind when we came back to the States. :-(
99% of bicycles in Japan are mamachari. There are so many of them that abandoned and trashed bikes litter many places (much of the garbage dredged from the lake at the imperial palace was bicycles).
Ride bikes, hybrids and mountain bikes are far and few between. Even the kids ride mamachari to school (at my school they aren't allowed to ride anything else, including mountain bikes). For a country so into riding bikes, properly cycling is a pretty minor pastime.
You can buy cheap ones for less than $100, but they weigh a ton and often only have one gear. Most people will get off and walk up hills. The more expensive ones have electric assists.
All mamachari come with at least one large basket, usually two. There are even special bikes designed to ride with TWO kids on them.
I stumbled upon this comic by accident...IT IS FREAKING HILARIOUS!!! I sat here and read every strip you have written! I love Japan, I lived there for 10 years and experienced many of the same things you have thus far. This site is staying with me!!!!!
Lol, as always, there's something to smile about. Miki is great, personally and Khalid, love your twitter posts. The chibis are adorable and I can agree about the vending machines - ah, so accessible and Japan has almost everything in them.

Love Karl's reaction in the last panel :)
