Give up on the seiza! They totally know that we can't do it!

How many people in Japan actully sit like that anymore? Anyway, thats really something you have to start at an early age.

Been here for almost seven years now, and I still can't sit like that. Thank goodness no one cares.

As part of my Japanese class we had to sit like that for an entire class period only to be told afterward that its primarily reserved for special events and ceremonies. Everyone's legs were cramping after an hour.

Actually, I've been hit with this one in America before. I took karate for several years, and we were expected to sit that way in class and at tournaments. It was always worse before we did our warm-up exercises, but afterwards we had other things to worry about. Like horse stance, a method of standing known for the teacher coming up and jabbing us in the back of the legs to see if we'd fold. I hated that. Then I entered a tournament one year and the roster got a little messed up. My group was called onto the floor too early, and I had to sit like that almost the whole time we waited. After fifty minutes they finally told us we could sit cross-legged if we wanted, but by then my legs had adjusted and sitting cross-legged ended up hurting worse! Seiza-style can really suck...

You're expected to sit seiza if you do kendo, karate, etc.

Although apparently when a women wears a full kimono, it's actually quite comfortable because of the padding and the design of kimono...
