My father was in Japan in the 50's he said that even on maps, locations were given realtive to prominent buildings. I would have thought that by now the whole country would have little grid markers everywhere.

For whatever reason, the Japanese solution to public littering has been to encourage people to take the trash home with them, which they do by removing trash cans from public spaces. Following the same line of thinking, the usual method to discourage loitering is to eliminate benches or seats from bus stops and train stations.

And the Japanese postal address system is based on a completely different model than the US. Street maps as we know them are largely useless unless you know some good landmarks already.

@Sugarlessllama I would always just save all of my garbage in my pocket and throw it away at the train station. Right after I used the bathroom. ;)
