Wait someone can see our comments?! Shoot! HEY JAPAN! HOW ARE YOU! my name is Alicia San! Im very disappointed I won't get to travel abroad next year for spring time to Tokyo since my university won't go there due to nuclear fall out and they are scare. Please Please kidnapped me and put me in a nice home so I could live and learn the language. Thank you!
My father was in Japan in the 50's he said that even on maps, locations were given realtive to prominent buildings. I would have thought that by now the whole country would have little grid markers everywhere.
For whatever reason, the Japanese solution to public littering has been to encourage people to take the trash home with them, which they do by removing trash cans from public spaces. Following the same line of thinking, the usual method to discourage loitering is to eliminate benches or seats from bus stops and train stations.
And the Japanese postal address system is based on a completely different model than the US. Street maps as we know them are largely useless unless you know some good landmarks already.
