Okay, it's not really his first night sleeping in Japan but it is his first night sleeping in his own apartment, on a futon in Japan. Not the most comfortable experience!
What no A/C? I never even heard of any apartments in Japan (except maybe in northern Hokkaido) that did not have A/C? It gets stupid hot and humid in Japan during the summer. Typically the A/C units are mounted above one of the living room windows and also serve as heaters in the winter.
And you don't just put your futon mattress directly on the tatami floor. There should be a memory form pad (matto) that you put under the mattress to make it much more comfortable. You can buy them for about (JPY)¥4000 or so.
Poor Karl, I do hope that things get better for him.
OK Mr. "Busy." We get it. You lived in Japan and you're a big expert on everything. Are you really going to nitpick every little thing in every strip??
It's Miss Busy (Lisa/リサ) in real-life, and I was only providing comments on my own experiences in Japan. Sorry I did not mean to come across as nitpicking on a great comic, which I look forward to every Tuesday & Thursday.
When I was there I was given a bean-filled pillow, as I was expected to 'be Japanese'. Took awhile to get used to the fact that every time I rolled over the sound of beans rolling together woke me up. Not very soft either. At least the futon was a thicker one^^
I think that crunchy "bean pillow" was actually a buckwheat pillow, which are popular in Japan. Although it is a matter of taste, personally I love my buckwheat pillow, since it allows air to flow and stays cool, and does not mess up my long hair as much as a normal pillow. (Especially on hot & humid nights.)
Minus the fact your trying to teach english as a job in Japan,. not sure why but I am thinking Excel Saga when I see this picture. Keep up that work Khalid :3
It's very normal for an apartment in Japan to have no screens and no A/C. It definitely attributes to the number of heat-related deaths in the summer. I insisted on an a/c when I was last looking for apartments after living in one that didn't, and not realizing that before I signed. To me it was a given, but in Japan it's not! Not yet anyways.
