You're lucky! During holiday season the bullet trains are packed with students and what not going home etc -_-; and I could never get a seat during those times (almost always stood by the doorway)

Only ever stood in the doorway once (on a commuter-level Tsubame, not the full Shinkansen). Never again. The few times I've taken Shinkansen, it's reserved seating all the way...
