Is this really something that is special and unique to the Japanese? Most societies use politeness as a lubricant for social interaction.

1. Will telling Karl his lesson plan sucks make up for Karl's lack of a teaching diploma?

2. Tall people ARE a statistical freak in Japan. So are wide people.

3. Japanese IS a difficult language for native English speakers to learn.

4. Japan is a racially homogeneous culture. This attitude would really only be surprising to an American.

Tall people are cool AND freaks. This is why they say Japan is a land of many contrasts. ;) The biggest problem with being tall is that everyone thinks you play basketball...
