Seems there was some miscommunication, and I'm not sure how much of it was due to the language barrier.

The way most teachers in Japan survive. Write up a basic speech and practice the heck out of it until it's memorized.

I can relate to Carl's situation, not to mention his stress level. Gotta do a 5-minute presentation in complete Japanese flawlessly as part of my final grade. Love to see what he does and hopefully the same can work for me too.
