In my case, I would just leave at 6pm, since as a lazy foreigner it was deemed acceptable for me to leave at a proper time after 9 hours of highly productive work in the office. (In some way, I was used as the foreigner scapegoat.)

I've known foreigners working in Japanese offices who busted their butts at work, left just after their hours were up, and were three or four times more productive than their Japanese counterparts who were taking two or three coffee breaks an hour, then smoke breaks, then standing around gossiping. And the sad thing is, the foreign worker was looked down upon for leaving at 5:30, WHEN HE WAS SUPPOSED TO. Everyone else left at least an hour later, so that they could look more productive.]]>
